The Ultimate Travel Guide to Visit the Sydney Opera House

The Sydney Opera House is a performing arts venue. The main events that occur there are: concerts, operas, theatre, dances, and talks. It is similar to the National Arts Center (NAC) in Ottawa, however, the Sydney Opera House is well-known for its architectural style with the shells. Here is a travel guide to help you to visit the Sydney Opera House and ultimately make you enjoy your time there. As a preview, on the right is a photo on one side of the Opera House I took while I was there!

Where is it located?

The Sydney Opera House is located in the city of Sydney, Australia. It is overlooking Sydney Harbour. It is also in front of the Sydney Harbour Bridge where the iconic fireworks are lit at midnight on New Year’s Day. It is centrally located and is served by various pubic transit options such as busses, trains, and ferries. It also has underground parking facilities. Those who are nearby can also bike or scooter there however, its important to be aware that once on the Opera House premises, the bikes and scooters have to be walked to the parking spot due to the increased number of pedestrians in the area.

What to do?

When one visits the Sydney Opera House, they can visit it to take in the visually appealing architecture with the various shells on the roof. While in the area, they can also take in the sights of the surrounding waters, the Harbour Bridge (like the photo I took on the right). They can also go inside and take a tour of the various performance spaces. They can also go for one of the shows going on at the time. There is always something going on to suit everyone’s tastes and there are shows available for all ages from kids to adults and seniors. There are always family-friendly shows happening at the Sydney Opera House, there is also a variety of tours available which make it fun for them to explore the place while also learning about its history. Kids will also be fascinated in the architecture of the Opera House and will for sure have a blast visiting the Opera House!

Recommendations

It is recommended to arrive and check-in 20-30 minutes ahead of the show so you have enough time to do the security checks  When you plan on visiting the Sydney Opera House for a show, it is advised to leave big bags or large handbags at home and instead bring smaller bags (not larger than a letter size paper) to avoid putting it in the cloaking room. On a related note, it is prohibited to bring drones and recording devices. It is recommended to reserve tickets in advance as popular shows can sell-out quickly and there may not be any available when you go in person. Tickets for upcoming shows can be found here. For those who are interested in knowing how the performances work, there is a tour available which shows the backend. There is also a tour to see the inside as well as the outside and learn about its history.
